One of the most recognizable landmarks in Istanbul - the Galata Tower is the last addition to the defense structures in Constantinople.  The tallest structure in its day, the tower provided views along the Bosphorus for spotting enemy fleet as well as views over the city for spotting fires before they got out of control. From Sultanahmet, take the T1 tram for the ride across the Galata Bridge and then climb up a steep and narrow street to the tower.
