Baixa
Back in Roman occupation times, this area was under water. Now, Baixa is one of the first examples of anti-seismic construction. Its current planning was ordered by Marquis of Pombal following the big earthquake of 1755, which destroyed two thirds of the city.
Tip: Check the Archaeological Centre at Coreeiros Street for its history. Get up-high to fully appreciate its planning - Graça’s Lift or Rua Augusta’s Arch for a small fee or the rooftop bars at Hotel do Rossio or Hotel Mundial. And please don’t dine at Rua Augusta’s Esplanades: they are tourist traps and you get much better for much cheaper anywhere around there.
