Jerónimos Monastery
This jaw-dropping UNESCO listed sight is one of the most memorable not just in Lisbon, but in the entire country. It’s almost unreal in its ornateness and grandeur and your first sight of its magnificent cloisters will stop you in your tracks. The interior of the church is the work of true masters and contains several royal tombs as well as the final resting place of Vasco de Gama. The construction of the church and monastery began in 1501 and took 100 years to complete and was barely damaged in the massive earthquake that flattened much of Lisbon in 1755. This place has stood the test of time and should be at the top of the list of must-see attractions for anyone planning on visiting Portugal’s capital.
