Le Bateau Lavoir
Many visitors to Montmartre will pass No. 13 Rue Ravignan at Place Emile Goudeau not realising that for a significant period during the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was the centre of the global art world. Given the nickname Le Bateau Lavoir meaning ‘The Boat Wash-house’ for the way it swayed and creaked on stormy days, the likes of Picasso, Matisse, van Dongen and Modigliani lived, worked and mingled alongside other artists as well as writers, poets, playwrights and actors. #art #arthistory #montmartre
