Ever since I first saw a photo of the heart-wrenching “Galata Morente” decades past, I’ve been infatuated with the incredibly poignancy with which it captures the final moments of this long ago warrior contemplating his imminent death. Actually seeing the real article here at Rome’s bastion of classical art was as supremely moving as I had thought it would be. And besides this splendid tour de force, the Capitoline Museums house works by most major Italian painters, medieval and Renaissance masterworks and classical Roman bronzes and marbles. In a city full of superb Museums, these are some of the finest.
