Stonehenge
Yes, there are a lot of tourists, but there are ways to minimize your exposure to the hoards. First, go during the week and later in the day. Next, take a train to Salisbury, once there walk to the main square in the city center and catch the X5 bus to Amesbury. Get off close to the Countess bus stop near the Burger King/travel lodge and follow the footpath signs. Take a left off of Countess rd to a dirt road(there will be a sign pointing towards Stonehenge at the start of the road). You'll walk along a long, straight dirt road with open fields on both sides for about 10-15 minutes. After a bend in the road towards the right, take your first left and within a minute you will see Stonehenge in the distance across an open field. Follow the path for 2-3 minutes until you reach a gate on your right. Go through the gate and go across the field towards Stonehenge. View from a distance for free or get to the free shuttle to bring you to the visitors center to buy a ticket and return to view it up close. The walk is beautiful, secluded, sparsely walked and is about 2.5-3 miles, one way, (1 hour). It's worth the walk as you will drastically minimize your exposure to the large tour busses and crowds. However, once at Stonehenge all bets are off. #history #stonehenge #england #uk
