Otaru is an historic port city half an hour by train from Sapporo. It’s known for glass making, and the main street has many glass shops. Other shops sell various Hokkaido delicacies, such as cheesecake, ice cream, chocolate, and crab. As the city’s importance as a port declined, many of the old warehouses along the picturesque Otaru Canal fell into disuse.
