As you drive from Songpan to Zoige county on the Tibetan Plateau, you start to rapidly gain altitude. The scenery changes from valleys and mountains to the flatter expanse of the high altitude plateau. Zoige county lies at the average altitude of 3,500 meters above the sea level, with some of the passes along the road reaching over 3,800 meters.
