Goryokaku was built in the 19th century modelled on European style fortifications, to defend Hakodate. Today it is open to everyone as a park and the modern tower next to it gives a good view of the star shaped layout. The paths on top of the ramparts and outside of the moat are popular with walkers and runners, while the trees provide many shady spots to sit down and relax. #hakodate #history #free
