Gravensteen
This stately castle, former residence of various Flemish counts and one of Ghent’s most popular sights, was constructed in the 12th century. It was slated for demolition in the late 1800s, after years of being put to other uses, but fortunately cooler heads prevailed and the city instead initiated a grand renovation project. If a view of the gruesome torture devices on display is a bit much, head to the top of the main building for some knockout views.
