The Panfilov Park (or Park of the 28 Guardsmen) is a nice place to walk around in Almaty. The Zenkov Cathedral is located there, as well as a building entirely dedicated to chess (even if you don't play, just watching the players is quite an experience). There are also people selling seeds for pigeons in the center of the park, so you can feed them and have them all around you.
