Fire Island may not be officially part of New York City but from June to August, it might as well be. It was probably best known as a lively, and fairly wild, escape for gay men until the AIDS crisis hit hard here in the 1980s. Today it’s definitely more subdued but is still a popular and fun summer hangout. The main LGBT communities can be found at Cherry Grove and The Pines.
