The Centre Pompidou is the most famous site for modern and contemporary art in Paris, but I don’t know...I just felt like there was something lacking there. Less well-known but ultimate more satisfying is the Musee D’Arte Moderne de la Ville. Think of any big name from the art world of the 20th century and you are more than likely to find his or her works on display here. Even better you can visit the permanent exhibitions for free, a pleasant surprise in pricey Paris.
