Also known as Gunkanjima, or Battleship Island, due to what the island looks like from afar. Formerly a coal mining island that housed thousands of employees for the Mitsubishi coal mine there. Was abandoned later and closed to the public for decades until reopening about five years ago for tour groups only. You must book boat tours in advance and they may not run due to inclement weather.
