Gorgeous Coimbra can be done as a long day trip from either Porto or Lisbon, but really treat yourself and stay a few days. It’s the former medieval capital of Portugal and site of the country’s oldest university, a visit to their library is mandatory. It’s a bit of a climb to the old town but once you get up there, it will be even harder to finally drag yourself back down. You’ll be richly rewarded with great museums (don’t miss the Museu de Cienca), gorgeous churches and charming back streets while mingling with a friendly student population.
