San Juan de Ulúa
This castle/fortress is located on the island of the same name right by the Veracruz harbor.
It was built by the Spaniards back in the 1500. It had several functions throughout the years but the latest was as a prison in which torture and abuse was a regular requisite.
Today it functions as a museum so you can either explore the buildings by yourself or join one of the guided tours that will tell you more about its history.
