Kalta Minor Minaret
Khiva old town, Uzbekistan
The 29 metre Kalta Minor minaret is the symbol of the old town. The construction begun in 1851 by the Khiva ruler Mohammad Amin Khan. According to the legend, he wanted to build a minaret so high he could see all the way to Bukhara. Unfortunately, he was killed in 1855 and the construction stopped. The massive tower is said to have only one third of its supposed project height with foundation diameters of 15 metres and beautifully decorated turquoise glazed tiles and majolica.
