The Blue Pond is nestled in the forest above Biei, and its brilliant colour is only revealed by following the path through the trees. The pond was made by damming a river to prevent a volcanic mudflow reaching Biei, and the colour is caused by naturally occurring minerals and chemicals. The blue colour is most intense in summer and on still days the semi-submerged tree trunks are reflected on the mirror-like surface of the pond. #biei #blue #free #photography
