Victoria Memorial
Victoria Memorial Hall, a massive marble monument, is dedicated to Queen Victoria. Inside is a soaring hall under the dome and a museum, a treasure trove of artifacts tracing the history of Kolkata. This splendid edifice built in 1921 in a mix of Mughal, Italian and Saracenic styles, stands in beautifully manicured grounds filled with gardens, a reflecting lake and gravelly walking paths. It stands on the southern end of the Maidan, the expansive greens that covers the heart of the city. Inside and around it are some of the most iconic buildings, statues, monuments, defense installations and sports stadiums that this city offers. The Maidan is where Kolkata’s residents come for leisurely walks, family outings, football and cricket matches and to enjoy the myriad street foods that this city proffers.
