Not surprisingly, this hilltop fortress dominates Ljubljana and can be seen from all around the city. You can huff and puff your way to the top or give your feet a rest and take the funicular, but either way you’ll be rewarded with some breathtaking views. The guided tours are totally cheesy, costumed actors spouting predictably over-dramatic lines, although they do provide a decent historical overview of the fortress. It’s the site’s museums that really seal the deal here. There’s a well done history exhibit and the adorable Museum of Puppetry is a big hit with visitors of all ages.
