Dohány Street Synagogue
#museum #synagogue #moorish #history The Dohany Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Europe. In the 19th century a quarter of the city was Jewish. The building resembles a church and it was built in the 1850’s to honor the Jewish peoples Moorish and Middle Eastern heritage. During WWII Hungary lost a half million Jews in the Holocaust and there is a weeping willow tree whose leaves are engraved with the names of the dead as a memorial to those lost on the grounds.
