Mount Hua, also known as Hua Shan (Shan = mountain) is located just 30 minutes from Xi'an travelling by fast train (a highlight in itself!). This is the western mountain of China's 5 great mountains, and holds important religious significance. The mountain has 5 major peaks, with some of those featuring multiple summits. For a scenic option take one of the cable cars near the East Gate visitor centre, or if you want a challenge, hike from the bottom! Highly recommended is the plank walk (NB: this is not always open due to weather), a scary crossing starting with a descent via a crevice in the cliff, then shuffling along 2 narrow planks of wood (you have a safety harness) over 2,000m above sea level!
