Leopold Museum
I almost burst into tears a couple of times while at this museum, so in awe of the beautiful, raw and often pain-filled works by (IMHO) the greatest painter of modern times. If you aren’t particularly acquainted yet with the genius of Austrian artist Egon Schiele, it’s time you got to know him better. While there are some spectacular pieces on display by other artists, Schiele’s Viennese Modernism is the main attraction here and this museum contains the largest collection of his works in the world. He died tragically young at only 28 in 1918, but was recently in the news again making the kinds of headlines he would have loved. When the Leopold mounted an exhibition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death, the public ads featuring some of his racier images were required to be displayed with strategically placed banners, they were considered too explicit even now.
