Moderna galerija
I am shocked, shocked, that a certain popular and generally reliable guidebook that I usually refer to during my travels gives exactly two paltry sentences in their Zagreb pages to this eye-opening museum. The first floor of the Moderna Galerija is filled with mostly pleasant and enjoyable if not always terribly exciting works from the 19th century, although there are a few first-rate canvases in the back rooms. But then head to the second floor for the “wow” moments. It’s hard to believe that these truly remarkable works by Croatian artists are almost completely unknown outside of their home country. I really can’t say enough about the quality and the impact of so many of these jaw-dropping pieces. Go see them now before the rest of the world finds out!
