Mirogoj Cemetery
A quick 10 minute bus ride north of Zagreb’s Cathedral gets you to the final resting place of many of the bold-faced names from Croatian history, the ravishing Mirogoj Cemetery. You’ll cross the centuries walking through this sprawling area, taking in everything from ridiculously overwrought Habsburg era monuments to stark, blocky Communist tombstones. There are Serbian Orthodox, Muslim and Jewish sections as well as memorials to victims of various political tragedies. Especially fascinating are the monuments to the soldiers who fought from different countries in WWI, particularly the French tribute which actually lists the names of a large number of colonial Vietnamese troops who died on Croatian soil. History is definitely complicated in this part of the world and Mirogoj does its best to remind you of that.
