Gotokuji is where the legend of maneki neko (lucky cat) originated. An important lord was passing by when there was a sudden thunderstorm. The temple’s cat waved at him to come inside, saving him from getting wet. Today many people come to Gotokuji to offer prayers for good luck, buying maneki neko in various sizes either to place at the temple or take home with them.
