Second Baptist Church of Detroit
Since shortly after its founding in 1836 by 13 former slaves until the Civil War, Second Baptist Church served as a "station" on the Underground Railroad, hosting 5,000 escaped slaves under its sanctuary as they prepared to journey into Canada, just up the road. The Detroit Underground Railroad Historical Society provides tours and lectures of this vital space.
