The British Museum
It doesn’t seem as if most art and archeological artifacts in the British Museum actually comes from anywhere near the British Isles. The question of legitimate acquisition hangs heavy over this cultural behemoth, it made me a tad uneasy at times to be wandering around admiring the priceless cultural heritage of other (often conquered) parts of the world. But unfortunately many great museums around the world hold what they do thanks to a little pillage and plunder. So by all means, thoroughly enjoy the famous and unparalleled delights of the British Museum, the Egyptian mummies, the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, the remarkable Assyrian treasures and the charming Lewis Chessmen. Just keep it in the back of your mind where they came from..
