Sera Monastery
The Sera Monastery is most famous for it’s almost daily (not on sundays) debates the monks hold at 3pm. They say debates but it’s more like students reciting and answering questions of teachings they have learned while the teacher responds positively or negatively through aggressive claps. It’s one of the three important monasteries in Tibet. Much of the monastery, it’s art, and it’s artifacts were destroyed after the Tibetan uprising against the Chinese in 1959 and hundreds of monks were killed and many of the rest fled to India over the Himalayas in the winter. Please be respectful and don’t walk on the gravel or stick selfie sticks in the monks faces who are trying to recite complicated things they’ve learned by memory. #architecture #art
