Barnes Foundation
The outstanding Barnes Foundation is one of the East Coast’s best art museums. It takes a little getting used to the “wall ensembles” (stuff is all mixed up and just about everywhere) and the lack of accompanying text, but this place seduces you quite quickly. I also definitely don’t share the late Mr. Barnes’ fondness for cross-eyed Renoir ingenues, otherwise his taste was (IMHO) pretty impeccable. Especially striking are the works by Soutine and Modigliani, Van Gogh and Cezanne are well represented and there are hundreds of other beautiful works by both big names and lesser known artists. Excellence all around!
