Pastéis de Belém
Pasteis de Belem is the bakery where the pasteis de nata originated. This cafe is started selling the delicious moreish pastries in 1837 after the recipe was developed by the monks of the nearby Jeronimos Monastery.
This is a tourist favourite, and in the summer, the takeaway lines stretch right along the street. You can try your luck at the cafe inside but again you may have quite a wait. Check out the iconic azulejo tile murals inside and head to the back where there is a hidden courtyard where you can have a drink and a pastel de nata.
My top tip is to buy a tube of six pasteis de natas, help yourself to the sachets of powdered sugar and cinnamon, and head to the gardens outside the monastery to people watch and snack.
