Hill of Crosses
Thousands upon thousands of crosses rise from this hillock in the Lithuanian countryside. The pilgrimage site dates back to the 14th century. During Soviet occupation, soldiers would tear down the crosses everyday, but people would sneak out to plant more every night. Today tangles of crosses hang from trees, and dangle from other crosses which reach up 9 meters in height! The sheer volume is overwhelming! #lithuania
