Aachen Cathedral
There are just so many superlatives in the English language and none of them really quite capture the splendor of the Aachen Cathedral. It was one of the very first places ever listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has got to be one of the most awe-inspiring buildings on the planet. You will never forget your first view of it! Charlemagne began construction on the original chapel in the 8th century and was laid to rest here after his death. The cathedral was then built up throughout the years, requiring a major restoration after some serious damage was inflicted during WWII. The highlights of its interior are the jaw-dropping Carolingian Octagon, the throne of Charlemagne and the golden altarpiece, although there is so much more to see here. Give yourself several hours to explore this truly magical place.
