Polonnaruwa is a vast historical site founded by the Cholas of south India before being taken back by Sri Lankan Sinhala kings. The area is leafy with its serene vegetation and can be explored by bicycle. The ruins and monuments are mostly dedicated to Buddha and the impressive place is part of Sri Lanka's cultural triangle as well as UNESCO's world heritage sites.
