Mark Hanna's question in Indonesia

Food

When is it appropriate to tip and for how much in Bali? I’ve read a lot of different opinions on it. I lean more toward the camp of tipping is a nice gesture and appreciated but i don’t want to offend. I gave our server today 20k for a 220k meal and he seemed upset/confused by it. Am I better off not tipping or am I giving too little?

It's not customary. I only tipped there when I had exceptional service and made a connection with the person, like for a great massage or if someone puts a great effort into my meal. Depends where in Bali you are too. Many parts of the island are used to tourism by now - Ubud, Canggu
Thanks. We are playing it by ear. Definitely doesn't seem mandatory like in the USA. But for great service we add a tip to say thanks. Especially with drivers and food service. Thanks for the reply and follow!
