Thanks very much for your input everyone - really appreciate it!
We hired a self drive car, though for city commute public transport is excellent and cheapest
Would agree on skipping Eilat ( nice beach but barbed wire beach border with Egypt when I was there long time ago was off-putting ). I also mentioned Masada because of the hike up to the ruins on the hill from the Dead Sea area below and the general desert scenery in this region. Safe travels.
But if you have only 4 days, I would recommend to skip Eilat (it's just a seaside place, nothing special) and to go instead in Mitzpe Ramon and/or Dead Sea/Massada
I spent 2 months in Israel/Palestine recently, message me if you want more details on hostels, routes, and so on
For other beautiful landscapes, go to Massada as mentioned before, Ein Gedi and Ein Bokek for the Dead Sea. Those three places are nearby, the best way is actually to hitchhike for one place to another (very easy and safe) as there is one main road linking the 3 places
To book hostels in Israel I recommend you to use the website ILH, most of the best hostels are not on booking but on this website you can find good places with discounts
Hi Sarah, If you have time and want to go hiking, go to Mitzpe Ramon. It's the desert and you have amazing landscapes there, with a crater. You can go by bus, you don't need to book a tour for anything in this country. There is a hostel there, they can give you lots of advice "The green backpackers"
Thanks very much - did you go through a tour or just catch a taxi or bus to the places you went to?
I have a whole list on Israel. We were there last year. You may like to check out the list on my profile
Hi Sarah... recommend seeing Masada ... the siege and story of the long Roman campaign to sieze this Jewish settlement/fort by the Romans and the outcomes is fascinating history as well as the proximity to the Dead Sea I still remember as highlights of a similar trip to Israel .. floating on the Dead Sea “water” you also wont forget.
