Hi! Rovaniemi is perhaps the best place to start exploring (Finnish) Lapland. Christmas time can be too popular so I would recommend weeks before Easter. Summer there is totally awesome if you don't mind mosquitoes. It depends on what you want to experience.
Rovaniemi has pretty good connections by plane or train from southern Finland. During Xmas there's also many foreign travel agency arranged flights arriving to Rovaniemi.
