Vlatadon Monastery
It’s a bit of a hike through the maze of streets of Thessaloniki’s upper town, the Ano Poli neighborhood, to reach this Unesco Heritage sight, the screeching of peacocks will let you know that you are nearby. But rest assured, you will be well rewarded with both the spectacular views of the city and the timeless wonder of this ancient monastery. Make sure to check the times for the opening of the church before you go or else you’ll miss the startling frescos, partially destroyed as high up as the once invading Turks could reach with their implements of destruction.
