Tortuguero National Park sits on the North East Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. This thin sliver of land, accessible by boat or plane only, separates a very rough Caribbean from a mighty river, referred to locally as the "mini Amazon". Most famous for turtles (Tortuguero literally means "Turtle Catcher"), it is swamped with tourists during the nesting seasons. If you visit in a quieter time, though, expect silent waterways perfect for kayak wildlife tours.
