Nizami Street (Torgovy)
What Oxford street is to London or Orchard Road is to Singapore, Nizami Street is to Baku. The traffic free street dates back to 1864 when it became an important part of the city's main planning project. Besides the bolt store fronts plus glitzy entrances of commercialised shops, Nizami holds historical significance in shaping the city. The fan shaped designs in pebble grey and white on the pavement gives the street a real lift. Peering up at all the varying revival styles of neo gothic to neo moorish really enriched my encounter there. Fountains, arcades, tiny squares and balconies all contribute to the synthesis of styles apparent in Nizami.
