Lẩu RắnTám Tý Cần Thơ
There is a place in a suburb of Cần Thơ serving snake and other reptilian creatures. Raw, rustic and very local are some words that spring to mind when you enter. This wasn’t the kind of place that saw many tourists, and the language gap was immediately clear. But the owner seemed to recognize that my interest was sincere, not just idle curiosity. Without hesitation, he welcomed me like any other serious customer, using gestures, a few shared words, and some help from a translation app to explain what was on offer and how it was prepared. We went for the stewed sunbeam snake, which came with a variety of herbs and vegetable such as pennywort, and luffa, grown locally in Vietnam.
Overall the taste was mild, chewy and tough in texture but not the overpowering flavours one might expect. During the course of the meal the meat got a little more succulent, thus making it much easier to chew and digest it. Combined with the other ingredients, accompanying sauces the experience and modest drinks came to a little short of thirty euros in local currency.
