The Bushwick Collective
The Bushwick area, once known for rampant crime and the devastating 1977 riots, has reinvented itself as a hip, edgy artist’s enclave. And honestly, if there’s a better collection of street art anywhere in the world, please let me know because I’ll be on the next plane there. The collective consists of block after block of towering, stunning, multicolored murals created by famous graffiti artists from around the world. This is my absolute, number one pick for an unforgettable art experience in the borough and one of the top sights of any kind in NYC.
You can visit the collective on your own but I’d recommend contacting the outfit freetoursbyfoot.com. They’ll provide a captivating overview of the history of graffiti, an explanation of the difference styles and techniques and will point out the true gems among the seemingly endless display of the genre on view in the neighborhood. It doesn’t cost anything to join a tour, just make sure to tip your guide a little something before leaving.
