Since the catastrophic earthquake that hit Lisbon in 1755 Carmo Convent has never been fully restored. You can still see the pointed gothic arches of the nave and make out its original form. After it was abandoned by clerics at the start of 1800's it came under occupation of the military. It now serves as the Republican guard headquarters. The view from the top of Santa Justa lift is one of the best places to get a sense of its size. #convent #history #architecture
