While it's best to go in winter, there are generally always some monkeys out and about. To get there from public transport/the parking lot, be prepared for a legit walk through the forest with snow in winter but the end of the trail is very much worth it. Have your camera ready and don't make any eye contact with the monkeys to antagonize them. Afterwards, make your way to Karuizawa for an amazing onsen connected to the train station!
