Holbert Trail to Dobbins Lookout
Photo via Gregory Clifford, istock
South Mountain Preserve is the largest municipal park in the world, with a mountain range spanning 16,000 acres across South Phoenix. Dobbins Lookout is a historical watchtower built during the Great Depression, and at 2,330 feet, it sits at the highest peak in the park. The Holbert trail starts at the base of South Mountain, and feels like it’s mostly switchbacks for the (almost) five mile climb up to the top. To get to the trailhead, hikers park next to Mystery Castle, an eclectic “home” built in the 1930s.
