Vincent Van Gogh found himself confined to the hospital in Arles between December 1888 and May of 1889, a period of great distress for the artist. Van Gogh was admitted to the hospital after cutting off part of his ear and gifting it to a prostitute. As he struggled with his mental health, Van Gogh painted beautiful landscapes like the Ward in the Hospital and The Courtyard of the Hospital, scenes that are instantly recognizable in the contemporary courtyard of the former hospital building. #vangogh #gardens #provence
