Uzhhorod
The border town of Uzhhorod lies in the most western region of Ukraine facing Slovakia and just misses the Carpathian Mountains to the north. Historically it had a strong presence of Hungarians from as far back as the 9th century when tribes arrived sometime after the first arrival of Slavs. As soon as I alit the marshrutka from Lviv, two patrol officers were on my case but after a bit of light questioning I was free to go. It's not common to come across foreigners in those parts and for them travelers could easily be meal tickets. It became apparent that having been stopped by the same officer later that day, it confirmed my suspicion. Fortune had it I was allowed to pass without parting with any bills! The city felt neither Ukrainian or Slovakian. Whilst some border towns can often resemble the characteristics of the adjoining country, this town did not. #views
