Dnipro River
The Dnipro River cuts its way through Ukraine like a giant 'S', knocked off balance a little. It's the fourth longest in Europe and the longest in the country stretching 2,200 kilometres. The river works its way from tributaries in The Valdai Hills of Russia. It continues south into Belarus and Ukraine before emptying its flow into The Black Sea. Seeing the river for the first time in the capital Kïev gave me a real feeling of its might and importance. It serves as a means for transportation across the country as well as a source for recreational activities, all year round. In summer Ukrainians line the banks of the unpunctuated woodland around the river with barbecues, replete with sizzling shashlik skewers. Winter sees fishermen prizing fish from holes in the feet thick ice. Fishing here has to be one of the coolest things to do in Kïev (no pun intended). If you want to try your hand at it, find a place to avail some gear on its banks close to metro stop Dnipro on line 1 (red line). Through autumn and spring, you'll find anglers dangling their rods off Metro Bridge in the hope for a bite on their lines, as traffic whizzes past at a lick. #views #photography
