Castiglione del Lago
In the green heart of the Italian region named Umbria, between the reeds and the enchanting white water lily, there is Lake Trasimeno, a real natural paradise where wild ducks, cormorants, kites and kingfisher flock to. There are three islands inside: Isola Polvese (declared a scientific-didactic park, which carries out scientific research, experimentation and environmental education activities there), Isola Maggiore (the only one permanently inhabited, connected to the mainland by a ferry service to the towns of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Passignano sul Trasimeno and Castiglione del Lago the three major cities around the lake full of ancient architecture, old tombs, silent charming streets and where you can also taste local food made expecially of Lake fish) and Minor Island, which has the shape of a comma. On the lake you can practice all water sports, especially sailing whith two nautical clubs. It is also an ideal place for windsurfing, water skiing and canoeing. Marked and signposted paths run through the hills surrounding the lake reaching the major centers of the basin. They are suitable for horseback riding, walking and mountain biking. Nature trails complete the perimeter of the Polvese Island. There are several municipalities in the Trasimeno area: some overlook the lake directly, others are just a short distance away but are affected by the charm and attractiveness of this stretch of water. Using public transport to move from a spot to another, will help this lake to be environmentally sustainable.
