Antigua Guatemala Cathedral
Dominating the east side of Parque Central is Catedral de San José, a stunning and somewhat imposing, partially restored, still-mostly-ruined Cathedral.
The site itself takes up an entire city block and the ruins are open to the public for exploration. Built in 1541 (and rebuilt in 1680), the Cathedral was one of the largest in Central America. The 1973 earthquake ended that claim, unfortunately, but the tours that operate within the grounds can really offer some perspective of just how enormous this site was in its heydey.
